A causa dei reagenti chimici usati per la sua decifrazione la leggibilità del palinsesto veronese delle Istituzioni di Gaio è stata irrimediabilmente compromessa. Tuttavia le note del Ms. lat. fol. 308 custodito nella Staatsbibliothek di Berlino consentono di distinguere la fase della recensio del testo da quellod ella emendatio e rappresentano uno strumento utile per comprendere la constitutio textus delle Istituzioni, nonché di ricostruire dettagliatamente la storia dei primi lavori di decifrazione del palinsesto.

Riccobono’s method of textual criticism of the Roman legal sources was developed in Berlin at the school of Gradenwitz, and subsequently finalized during his studies in Rome with Scialoja. Already in his first publications he showed awareness towards a reluctant application of the interpolationistic method. Riccobono addressed the weakness of textual criticism of Humanistic Jurisprudence and stressed the validity of the approach of the Italian glossators and commentators.
